2017 Small Businesses Marketing Fair Launches on June 15 at KINTEX
□ The SMBA organizes a “marketing fair” for SMEs. This fair will bring together the best products that Korean SMEs have to offer, providing them with opportunities to expand their presence in Korea and in the global market.

□ Small and Medium Business Administration of Korea (SMBA; Administrator Young-sub Joo) announced that the 2017 Small Businesses Marketing Fair will be held at KINTEX, Ilsan, from June 15 to 17. The fair aims to help Korean SMEs promote their best products and expand their distribution channels.

□ The fair will be attended by 270 SMEs, which will set up a total of 350 exhibition booths during the fair. It will feature a variety of programs designed to help SMEs secure distribution channels and improve consumers’ perception of SME products.

① The fair introduces some of the best offerings of Korean SMEs at its eight sections, including the Consumer Product Section, Furniture and Interior Section, Industry and IT Section, and Beauty and Fashion Section. Everyone is invited to have a firsthand look at the finest SME products.

* Consumer Product Section, Home Appliance Section, Furniture and Interior Section, Industry and IT Section, Beauty and Fashion Section, Food Section, etc.

② In addition, a “Buyers Conference” will also be held during the fair, with representatives from 80 large local and foreign distribution firms. This program will help SMEs gain access to other distribution networks that could help them market their products.

◦ In particular, the fair will feature Korean SMEs’ consumer products as flagship products to attract foreign buyers (some 20 firms) who have preference on the so-called “K-wave” products,* in an effort to help SMEs secure export opportunities.

* Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Colombia, etc.

◦ The fair will be attended by large distribution firms (around 60 companies) across all sectors—including department stores, hypermarkets, home shopping channels, and online platforms—who will serve as the bridge for SMEs’ efforts to enter Korea’s domestic markets.

③ For this year’s event, the SMBA designated June 12–18 as the “IMSTARS Week,” a week dedicated to showcasing the best SME products. During the week, in collaboration with 21 distribution firms,* the Administration will exert multi-thronged efforts to create a “marketing boom” for SMEs.

* Department stores, seven home shopping channels, T-commerce, online malls, etc.: Organize special events for SME products, set up dedicated spaces for SME products, and engage in other promotional activities

④ The fair also included a contest for SME “Hidden Star” Products to serve as the driving force for the Korean economy. A total of 187 SMEs submitted their products for the qualification round, among which five products* were selected through a document review followed by a user test round. The selected products will be introduced to consumers through an open audition,** which will be broadcasted live on TV.

* Glass Cleaner Robot, IOT Mobiles for Babies, Sprinkle Soy Paste Powder, DIY Fan, and Damadream

** 5 min team speech (entrepreneurs + celebrities) → Review by an audience panel (consumers, MDs, VCs)

◦ The five “Hidden Star Products” will receive free spots at Korea’s seven leading home shopping channels with high selling power. This will help boost the sales of SMEs.

* CJ O Shopping, GS Home Shopping, Home and Shopping, Hyundai Home Shopping, IM Shopping, Lotte Home Shopping, and NS Home Shopping (in alphabetical order)

□ The SMBA reaffirmed its commitment to building on the outcomes of the fair to improve Koreans’ perception of innovative SME products.

◦ SMBA also plans to work with the civil sector to help Korean SMEs secure more channels to the global market.
