The 2017 Global Entrepreneurship Week Korea (“GEW Korea 2017”) was held for two days on the 13th and 14th of November at the Grand Ballroom on the fifth floor of the Accor Ambassador Yongsan. Co-organized by the Korea Entrepreneurship Foundation, the Global Entrepreneurship Network, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies, and sponsored by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (the “MSS”), the event garnered praise from its many participants and was declared a resounding success.

This year’s event, held under the slogan “Evoke Tomorrow’s Values with Today’s Challenges” brought together entrepreneurship experts, teenagers, teachers, and startup entrepreneurs for a wide selection of programs, including the opening ceremony, conferences, debates, and hands-on activities.

The opening event consisted of an awards ceremony for people who helped spread entrepreneurship in various areas over the past year, and a keynote speech and a talk concert dedicated to the event’s theme, the ‘spirit of challenge’ and social values.

A total of 95 honors across five categories were bestowed during the ceremony, including the Entrepreneurship Achievement Award, the Youth Entrepreneur Award, awards for the winners of the Best Education Practice Competition and the Contents Contest, and the Most Loved Entrepreneur Award.

The award ceremony was followed by a keynote speech by Mr. Penny Low, Founder and President of the Singapore Social Enterprise Association, who discussed “Mindful Innovation and Entrepreneurship.” After the speech, the participants continued the discussion of the themes of the keynote speech in a ‘talk concert’ format with Korean social venture entrepreneurs.

Various conferences and forums on entrepreneurship were held after the opening ceremony, where the participants shared their entrepreneurship practices and engaged in debates on entrepreneurship and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

One of the highlights of the event was the Entrepreneurship Education Experts Consortium session which saw Professor Eunice Mareth Areola discussing the research trends on global social entrepreneurship and the expected effects of entrepreneurship education. This was followed by Korean professors and social enterprise representatives who covered a wide range of topics.
